Two turkeys will live to see another thanksgiving courtesy of Governor Terry Branstad.
The age-old tradition of a political figure pardoning a turkey made its way to Iowa Monday morning. Iowans gathered outside of the Terrace Hill Mansion to witness the Governor pardon the two turkeys Mildred and Marty. Branstad commented on how tame the two turkeys were compared to when his now grown up son was just a boy.
The 30-degree weather was probably the reason the turkeys barely moved during the 15-minute procession. Mildred and Marty will get to spend the rest of the their turkey lives at the Living History farms in Urbandale.
Other turkeys are not as lucky as Marty and Mildred, nearly 11 million Iowa turkeys end up on dinner tables and in sandwich shops each year.
